Cozy Winter Comforts: An Invitation to Gather This Month

Thereโ€™s a quote I recently read about entertaining at home that hasnโ€™t left me:ย โ€œSo many restaurants are working hard to recreate the atmosphere of a perfect dinner at home with friendsโ€”while home cooks are aspiring to create a restaurant experience at home.โ€

It perfectly captures the tension many of us feel when we host. We want something specialโ€ฆ but not stressful. Elevated, but still comfortable. Memorable, without being overwhelming.

That idea became the foundation for Cozy Winter Comforts, my January dinner party guideโ€”attached here.

January feels like the right time to slow down. The holidays are behind us, the calendar is quieter, and thereโ€™s space to gather without the rush. When I started putting this guide together, my goal was simple: to recreate the feeling of a great night outโ€”cocktails, shared plates, a beautiful mealโ€”while keeping the warmth and ease of being at home.

Just like dining out, this guide isnโ€™t about doing everything. Itโ€™s about choosing what sounds good, what fits your schedule, and what feels right for you.

Inside Cozy Winter Comforts, youโ€™ll find a thoughtfully curated winter menu, along with styling inspiration, a general hosting timeline, kitchen and serving suggestions, and recipes designed to flex with your comfort level. Every recipe includes built-in shortcuts, and every section is meant to support youโ€”not pressure you.

Consider this your invitation to gather your people, light a few candles, and enjoy a cozy meal that feels special because itโ€™s shared.

I hope youโ€™ll download the guide, make it your own, and use as muchโ€”or as littleโ€”of it as youโ€™d like. And as always, if you have questions or want help tailoring it to your space, your guests, or your time, Iโ€™m just a message away.

๐Ÿฆ€ Why These Crab Cakes Always Feel Like a Celebration

Some dishes instantly feel specialโ€”and these Crusty Crab Cakes with Lemon-Butter Sauce are one of them.

This is the kind of recipe that reminds you why simple, high-quality ingredients matter. When you start with the best lump crab you can find (look in the fresh seafood case, not the aisle), you donโ€™t need to do much to it. The crab stays tender and sweet, the exterior gets beautifully crisp, and every bite tastes fresh, bright, and indulgent in the best way.

The lemon-butter sauce ties it all togetherโ€”rich but balanced, buttery but lifted with citrus. Add fresh herbs and a squeeze of lemon, and suddenly youโ€™re eating something that feels straight off a coastal restaurant menuโ€ฆ without leaving home.

๐Ÿ‹ Why Youโ€™ll Love Making These

โœจ They feel fancyโ€”but theyโ€™re approachable.
Perfect for entertaining without feeling fussy or intimidating.

โœจ Theyโ€™re incredibly versatile.
This recipe makes four generous crab cakes, but it easily adapts:

  • Split into eight medium portions for a dinner party
  • Or twelve smaller cakes for a passed appetizer

โœจ Theyโ€™re a crowd-pleaser.
Even people who claim theyโ€™re โ€œnot into seafoodโ€ tend to fall hard for these.

โœจ Theyโ€™re memorable.
This is the kind of dish guests talk about the next dayโ€”and ask for the recipe.

๐Ÿฅ‚ How I Like to Serve Them

These crab cakes work beautifully as:

  • A light main course with a simple salad
  • A standout appetizer for a special gathering
  • The star of a coastal-inspired dinner party

However you serve them, they instantly elevate the meal and signal that something thoughtful and delicious is happening at the table.

๐Ÿฆ€ Crusty Crab Cakes with Lemon-Butter Sauce (GF)

Crab Cakes:
1 pound lump crabmeat, picked over for shells
1 cup almond flour
1/4 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons snipped fresh parsley
2 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 lemon, divided
1/4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper
2 eggs
2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Lemon-Butter Sauce:
1/2 cup dry white wine
juice of 1 lemon
1 shallot, finely chopped
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup butter, cut into small pieces

  1. For the crab cakes, zest the lemon. Combine the crabmeat, almond flour, mayonnaise, parsley, mustard, lemon zest, black pepper and eggs in a medium bowl, mixing gently. Divide the mixture into four equal patties. Place the patties on a cutting board and place in the freezer while preparing the sauce.
  2. For the lemon-butter sauce, combine the wine, juice from the lemon, and shallot in a small sautรฉ pan. Simmer over medium-high heat 4-5 minutes or until most of the liquid is evaporated. Season with the salt. Bring to a boil and remove from the heat. Add the butter pieces, one at a time, whisking after each addition until the butter is completely incorporated. Spoon the sauce onto plates and top with the crab cakes.
  3. Heat the oil in a large sautรฉ pan over medium heat until hot. Add the crab cakes. Cook 4-6 minutes or until both sides are deep golden brown and crisp, turning once. Remove from the pan and drain on paper towels.
  4. To serve, place a spoonful of the lemon-butter sauce on a serving plate and top with a crab cake.

Makes 4 crab cakes

โœ… Easy, Easier, Easiest Options:

โœจ Easy: Skip making the lemon butter sauce and serve the crab cakes with bottled lemon butter sauce.

โœจ Easier: Purchase frozen or premade crab cake and serve with the lemon-butter sauce.

โœจ Easiest: Purchase frozen or premade crab cakes (check the seafood case at your grocery store) and serve with bottled lemon butter sauce.

๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ Candlelight, Not Chaos

Candles are one of the easiest ways to instantly elevate a dinner party. They add warmth, intimacy, and that soft glow that makes everyone look and feel their best.

But letโ€™s be honest:
Yes, candles set the mood.
Yes, they require a little planning.
And yesโ€”itโ€™s very easy to overthink them.

As with so many parts of entertaining, the best approach is simple. Here are a few easy, stress-free rules to help you get candlelight right every time.

โœจ Dinner Party Candle Guidelines

  • Start with fresh candles.
Nothing kills the mood faster than candles burning out halfway through the evening.
  • Clean out old wax ahead of time.
Do this a few days before your party. Old wax can be stubborn, and what you think will take five minutesโ€ฆ often doesnโ€™t.
  • Group votives on a tray.
Light them all at once, then place them around the room. Itโ€™s faster, cleaner, and looks more intentional.
  • Invest in a stick lighter.
Theyโ€™re practical, efficient, and save your fingers from burns.
  • Never use scented candles.
Scents compete with foodโ€”and not in a good way. Even โ€œlightโ€ fragrances can distract or clash with what youโ€™re serving.
  • Watch the height of taper candles.
If guests have to lean side-to-side to see each other, the candles are too tall.
  • Flameless candles are fair game.
Theyโ€™ve come a long way and can look surprisingly realistic. Remember: itโ€™s about theย ambiance, not the flame itself.

๐Ÿฅ‚ The Takeaway

Candles should enhance the experienceโ€”not add stress. When done thoughtfully, they fade into the background and quietly do their job: creating warmth, comfort, and connection around the table.

If youโ€™re worrying about them, youโ€™re probably doing too much.

Letโ€™s Start with Sunday Dinner

My love of entertaining started early ๐Ÿฝ๏ธโœจ Growing up in a busy household, our home was always openโ€”filled with food, laughter, and friends gathered around the table. Hosting wasnโ€™t about perfection; it was simply how we connected ๐Ÿ’›

From my momโ€™s thoughtful preparation to my grandmotherโ€™s handwritten party notesโ€”complete with menus, details, and a small โ€œprizeโ€ for every guest ๐ŸŽโ€”I learned that the most memorable gatherings are built on intention, flexibility, and heart.

Today, entertaining at home feels more meaningful than ever. In a fast-paced world, slowing down to share a meal creates space for real connection ๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ๐Ÿทโ€”and it doesnโ€™t have to be complicated. Whether casual or dressed up, the goal is simple: make it feel special.

Inside this guide, youโ€™ll find everything you need to host with confidenceโ€”curated menus, styling inspiration, practical timelines, helpful tools, and flexible recipes with easy, easier, and easiest options ๐Ÿ™Œ Choose what works for you, skip the rest, and create something memorable around your own table ๐Ÿกโœจ

All recipes serve 4 which can easily be doubled if you have more guests. I canโ€™t wait to hear your thoughts and when you plan to give this a try!

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ A Plate Iโ€™ll Never Forget: Squash & Green Beans with Romesco Sauce

Some dishes stay with you long after the meal endsโ€”and this is one of them.

A few summers ago, Bill and I were vacationing on Marthaโ€™s Vineyard, where we enjoyed some of the best meals weโ€™ve ever had. On our very first night, we followed a localโ€™s recommendation and had dinner at The Covington. Tucked into the specials menu was an appetizer that stopped us both: squash and green beans with a creamy romesco sauce.

Bill was skeptical.
I was intrigued.

We ordered itโ€”and then promptly cleaned the plate.

I was completely in heaven. The vegetables were tender and vibrant, the romesco rich and velvety, with just enough depth to make the dish feel indulgent without being heavy. I knew immediately this was something I needed to recreate at homeโ€”and Iโ€™m happy to say, Iโ€™ve come pretty close.

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Why Youโ€™ll Want This Dish in Your Rotation

This is one of those rare recipes that feels both special and effortless.

  • It works beautifully as anย appetizerย for a dinner party
  • Itโ€™s just as perfect as aย side dishย alongside grilled chicken, fish, or a simple roast
  • Itโ€™s elegant enough for guests, but easy enough for a weeknight

I make this year-round, but it truly shines in the warmer months when squash and green beans are abundant at farmers marketsโ€”or overflowing in backyard gardens. This is absolutely a bookmark-worthy recipe.

๐Ÿฅ— A Feel-Good Dish That Happens to Be Delicious

Beyond how good it tastes, this dish is packed with ingredients that love you back.

  • Bell peppersย (a key part of romesco) support gut health and are rich in fiber, folate, potassium, and vitamin A
  • Zucchiniย delivers a boost of vitamin C, potassium, magnesium, and folate
  • Green beansย are a great source of protein and fiber, help lower cholesterol, and fight inflammation

Itโ€™s nourishing, satisfying, and deeply flavorfulโ€”proof that vegetables can absolutely be the star of the plate.

Squash & Green Beans with Romesco Sauce

Ingredients:

  • ยฝ cup almonds
  • 1 12oz jar roasted red bell peppers, drained
  • ยผ cup tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 3 garlic cloves, pressed
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ยฝ teaspoon thyme
  • ยผ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • ยฝ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ยฝ teaspoon salt
  • ยผ cup olive oil
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided
  • 2 shallots, thinly sliced
  • 8 ounces green beans, washed and trimmed
  • 2 small zucchini, cut in thirds, then into wedges
  • 2 small yellow squash, cut in thirds, then into wedges
  • 2 tablespoons chives, chopped

Directions:

  1. In a small skillet over medium heat, toast the almonds for 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and cool. Place the almonds in the bowl of a food processor fitted with the multi-use blade and pulse until coarsely chopped. Add the peppers, tomato paste, apple cider vinegar, garlic, paprika, garlic powder, thyme, cayenne, black pepper and salt and blend until smooth. Remove the sauce to a bowl and stir in the olive oil. Set aside.
  2. In a clean small skillet, heat 1 tablespoon oil over medium-high heat until shimmering. Add one shallot and fry until golden brown, about 15 minutes. When golden, remove from the oil and drain on paper towels.
  3. Meanwhile, prepare a bowl of ice water and set aside. In a large saucepan, bring 3 cups of water to a boil. Add the green beans and and cook until crisp-tender, 3-5 minutes. Drain and immediately plunge into the ice water.
  4. Heat 2 tablespoons oil over medium-high heat in a large skillet until the oil shimmers, about 3 minutes. Add the zucchini and squash and sautรฉ 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. To serve, place half of the romesco sauce on a serving plate. Top with the green beans, squash and shallot. Sprinkle with the fried shallot and chives. Dollop remaining romesco sauce around the edge of the plate.

Makes 4 servings.

โœ… Easy, Easier, Easiest Options:

โœจ Easy: Use a purchased romesco or Arrabbiata sauce from the pasta aisle.

โœจ Easier: Use precut vegetables in the produce section.

โœจ Easiest: Purchase frozen vegetables and premade sauce. Remember: it never has to be homemade.

โœจ The Takeaway

This is the kind of dish that surprises people. Itโ€™s unexpected, colorful, and memorable. Whether youโ€™re serving it to guests or enjoying it quietly at home, it has that restaurant-quality feel that makes a meal feel a little more special.

Sometimes all it takes is one plate on vacation to change how you cook forever.

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Are You Going Out to Dinner Tonightโ€ฆ or Starting Something New in 2026?

This year, Iโ€™m inviting you to try something different: Dinner parties.

Wait, what? Are dinner parties even a thing anymore?

Yes, yes they are. Yet they arenโ€™t the dinner parties of the past.

They are gathering for connectionโ€”not perfection.
They are great meals without huge spreads or elaborate tables that feel like a magazine photo shoot.
The are the not-necessarily-an-occasion dinner party.

Itโ€™s about being together. Thatโ€™s it.

๐Ÿฅ‚ The Truth About Going Out to Dinner

Letโ€™s be honestโ€”going out to dinner with friends does have its perks.
You donโ€™t have to cook.
You donโ€™t have to do the dishes.

But what are the trade-offs?

More expensive โ€“ Food, drinks, tax, and tips add up fast ๐Ÿ’ธ
Waiting times โ€“ Long waits for tables and food โณ
Crowds & noise โ€“ Hard to relax or actually talk ๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ
Limited control over ingredients โ€“ Tough for allergies or special diets โš ๏ธ
Portion disappointment โ€“ Either too smallโ€ฆ or way too much ๐Ÿด
Inconsistent quality โ€“ Amazing one visit, โ€œmehโ€ the next ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ
Scheduling stress โ€“ Reservations, traffic, parking ๐Ÿš—
Health trade-offs โ€“ More salt, fat, and sugar than you realize ๐Ÿง‚

Sound familiar?
