🐾 Pets & Parties: What to Do with Rover and Morris When Guests Arrive

One question that comes up surprisingly often when people start hosting more is this:

“What do I do with my pets during a dinner party?”

After all, pets are part of the family. They live in the house every day — so it can feel strange suddenly excluding them when guests arrive.

But when entertaining, a little planning around pets can make the evening more comfortable for everyone involved — including you.

🐱 Cats Usually Solve This Problem Themselves

If you have cats, you’re likely already familiar with their approach to social gatherings.

Most cats will happily excuse themselves and disappear the moment unfamiliar voices enter the house.

If you prefer to keep them tucked away, simply make sure they have:

  • Plenty of food and water
  • A fresh litter box
  • A quiet room where they can relax undisturbed

They’ll likely sleep through most of the party anyway.

🐶 Dogs Are a Different Story

Dogs, on the other hand, often believe a dinner party was planned specifically for them.

If your dog is anything like mine, she wants to greet every guest, sniff every bag, and be in the middle of the action 100% of the time.

While that enthusiasm is adorable, it can sometimes be a little overwhelming — especially when guests are arriving, coats are coming off, and drinks are being poured.

For that reason, it’s often best to keep dogs in another room during the beginning of the party until everyone is settled.

🤧 Consider Your Guests

When deciding what to do, always think about your guests as well.

Some guests may:

  • Have allergies to cats or dogs
  • Feel overwhelmed by a pet that wants constant attention
  • Be nervous or fearful around animals

Even the friendliest pet can unintentionally make someone uncomfortable.

Giving pets their own space during the gathering helps ensure that everyone feels relaxed.

🕯️ A Few Hours Is Perfectly Fine

The good news is that pets are incredibly adaptable.

Spending a few hours in another room with their bed, toys, food, and water won’t hurt them at all — and it allows you to focus on hosting without extra distractions.

If needed, you can always excuse yourself briefly to let the dog out for a quick break and then return to the party.

Your guests will hardly notice.

✨ The Goal

The goal of entertaining is to create a comfortable environment where everyone can enjoy the evening.

Sometimes that simply means giving Rover and Morris their own little dinner party in another room.

And that’s perfectly okay.

Here’s to happy guests, relaxed hosts, and pets who still get all the love when the evening winds down.

Cheers,
Colleen 🥂

🍃 Not Wasabi… Wabi-Sabi

One is a plant.
One is a philosophy.

Today, we’re talking philosophy.

You may have heard the term wabi-sabi, a Japanese aesthetic that celebrates beauty in imperfection, simplicity, and the natural cycle of growth and change.

At first glance, it can sound like the idea is to intentionally create imperfections — a crooked bowl, a chipped cup, something slightly uneven.

But as I read more about it, I realized something important.

Wabi-sabi isn’t about creating flaws.

It’s about accepting that flaws are inevitable — and letting them exist without stopping us.

✨ Perfection Is the Enemy of Trying

We live in a world that often feels like everything has to be camera-ready.

The table should look like a magazine spread.
The meal should be restaurant-perfect.
The house should look like no one actually lives there.

And for many people, that pressure becomes the reason they never host at all.

They think:

“My table isn’t fancy enough.”
“My cooking isn’t good enough.”
“My house isn’t perfect enough.”

And that stops them right in their tracks.

🍽️ Gathering Has Never Been About Perfection

Wabi-sabi reminds us that beauty often lives in the aged, weathered, asymmetrical, or incomplete.

A table that isn’t perfectly matched.
A platter that’s been used for decades.
A meal that’s a mix of homemade and store-bought.

Those things don’t diminish a gathering.

They make it authentic.

🥂 Why I Created My Dinner Party Guides

This philosophy is one of the reasons I created my dinner party guides.

They’re designed to remove the pressure.

Did you know you can follow the guide and never make a single recipe yourself?

You can:

  • Cook part of the menu
  • Purchase part of it
  • Or invite guests to contribute a dish

There are no rigid rules. The goal is simply to create a moment where people come together.

Because that’s what humans have done since the beginning of time.

We gather.
We share food.
We build community and friendship.

🌿 A Perfectly Imperfect Table

So the next time you think about hosting and hesitate because something isn’t perfect, remember wabi-sabi.

Your table doesn’t need to be flawless.

It just needs to be open.

Here’s to beautifully imperfect tables and the simple joy of gathering

Cheers,
Colleen 🥂

🍳 Big Flavor, One Pan: Turmeric Chicken, Chorizo & Pinto Bean Skillet (GF/DF)

Turmeric Chicken, Chorizo & Pinto Bean Skillet

Some nights you want dinner to be two things: fast and full of flavor.

This skillet meal checks both boxes beautifully.

Turmeric Chicken, Chorizo & Pinto Bean Skillet is one of those dishes that comes together quickly but tastes like it took far more effort. It’s layered with savory, smoky, and slightly earthy flavors that work together effortlessly, creating a meal that feels hearty and satisfying without being heavy.

And let’s be honest for a moment—it’s also gorgeous.

The golden color from the turmeric, the vibrant peppers, and the richness of the chorizo make this one of those meals that looks as good as it tastes. And as we all know… we eat with our eyes first.

Why This Dish Works So Well

One of the biggest reasons to love this recipe is its simplicity. Everything cooks together in one pan, which means fewer dishes and less time spent in the kitchen.

It’s also flexible. You can serve it over traditional rice for a comforting, filling meal or over cauliflower rice if you’re looking for something lighter. Either way, the flavors shine.

This kind of meal is perfect for busy weeknights, but it’s also impressive enough to serve casually when friends drop by. The bold aromas alone will have everyone asking what’s cooking.

The Health Benefits

Beyond its great flavor, this skillet is also packed with ingredients that provide real nutritional value.

Chicken offers lean, high-quality protein that supports muscle health and helps keep you feeling full longer. It also provides important nutrients like niacin and vitamin B6, which help the body convert food into energy.

Pinto beans are an excellent source of fiber and plant-based protein. They support digestive health, help regulate blood sugar levels, and provide important minerals like magnesium and potassium.

Bell peppers are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants that help support immune health while adding vibrant color and freshness to the dish.

Turmeric, the spice responsible for the dish’s beautiful golden hue, is widely known for its anti-inflammatory properties. Its active compound, curcumin, has been studied for its potential benefits in supporting heart health, joint health, and overall wellness.

Even the onions and garlic-like aromatics used in dishes like this contribute antioxidants and compounds that support immune function and heart health.

A Dinner That Feels Effortless

The beauty of a one-pan meal like this is that it delivers big flavor with very little fuss. It’s comforting, colorful, and nourishing—exactly the kind of recipe you’ll find yourself coming back to when you need something dependable and delicious.

Whether it’s a busy Tuesday night or a casual dinner with friends, this skillet proves that simple ingredients can come together to create something truly satisfying.

Here’s to one-pan dinners, bold flavors, and meals that make life just a little easier.

Cheers,
Colleen 🥂

Turmeric Chicken, Chorizo & Pinto Bean Skillet
Makes 6 servings

1 small onion, chopped
1 red bell pepper, diced
4 ounces ground chorizo
1 pound boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cut into 1-inch pieces
2 garlic cloves, pressed
1/2 cup chicken stock
1 15oz can pigeon peas or pinto beans, drained and rinsed
1/2 teaspoon oregano
1/2 teaspoon turmeric
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 cups cauliflower rice
cilantro, chopped

  1. Add the chorizo to a medium skillet.  Cook over medium-high heat 3-4 minutes or until browned, stirring and chopping frequently.
Remove the chorizo from the skillet into a bowl and keep warm.
  2. Cook the chicken in the same skillet 2-3 minutes or until browned.  Remove the chicken and place in the bowl with the chorizo and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, combine the onion, bell pepper, and garlic.  Cook 3-4 minutes over medium-high heat or until the onion begins to soften.  Add the stock, pigeon peas, oregano, turmeric and salt and bring to a boil.
  4. Add the chorizo and chicken to the skillet, cover and reduce the heat to low.  Simmer 15-20 minutes or until the liquid is absorbed and the chicken and chorizo are cooked through.  Remove from the heat and let stand, covered, for 5 minutes.
  5. Spoon the rice into serving bowls. Top with the chicken and chorizo mixture, sprinkle with cilantro (if desired) and serve.

🚪 Your Home, Your Boundaries: Hosting Without Giving the Grand Tour

One question that comes up more often than you might think is this:

“How do I protect my privacy when I entertain?”

The good news is the answer is simple.

Just because you’re hosting people in your home does not mean your entire home is open for viewing.

This isn’t a real estate showing and it’s certainly not an open house.

When you invite guests over, you are welcoming them into the spaces meant for gathering — typically the living area, dining space, kitchen, and guest bathroom.

Everything else? Completely optional.

🏡 Keep It Simple

If there are rooms you’d prefer guests not enter, the easiest solution is simply:

Close the door.

A bedroom with an unmade bed, a home office with stacks of paperwork, or the laundry room that exploded earlier that day — none of these require attention before guests arrive.

Most people will instinctively understand that a closed door means private space.

If you’re worried someone might wander in accidentally, a small sign that simply says “Private” works perfectly.

Simple. Clear. No awkward conversations required.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 When Children Are Attending

If there’s a chance younger guests will be present, it’s perfectly reasonable to take an extra step.

Children are naturally curious and sometimes closed doors feel more like invitations than boundaries.

In those cases, locking the door during the party is completely acceptable. It protects both your privacy and anything inside the room that you’d rather not have explored.

Think of it as making hosting easier — not being overly strict.

✨ The Real Goal

Remember, guests come to see you, not your entire house.

They’re there for the conversation, the meal, the laughter, and the time spent together.

Not a hallway tour.

So close the doors you need to close, enjoy the spaces you’ve prepared, and focus on the evening in front of you.

Here’s to welcoming homes, comfortable boundaries, and dinner parties that feel relaxed for everyone

Cheers,
Colleen 🥂

🍹 A Cocktail with a Story: The Pomegranate Margarita

Some cocktails are just drinks.
Others come with a story.

This Pomegranate Margarita falls into the second category.

Bright, vibrant, and just a little unexpected, this cocktail is a modern twist on a classic—but with roots that go much further back. It’s often referred to as “Persephone’s Punch” or even compared to a “Cosmo,” inspired by the Greek myth of Persephone, who was bound to the underworld for six months after eating six pomegranate seeds.

A little dramatic for a cocktail? Maybe.
But it does make it feel just a bit more special when you’re sipping it.

✨ Why You’ll Love This One

If you’re someone who enjoys a traditional margarita but wants something a little more elevated, this is it.

The pomegranate adds:

  • A subtle tartness
  • A touch of natural sweetness
  • And that deep, ruby-red color that instantly makes it feel festive

It’s the kind of cocktail that works just as well for a casual night in as it does for a dinner party. It looks beautiful in the glass, feels seasonal without being limiting, and pairs easily with a variety of flavors.

And let’s be honest—this is one of those drinks your guests will notice the moment you set it down.

🍽️ When to Serve It

This is a perfect:

  • Welcome cocktail for a dinner party
  • Signature drink for a themed evening
  • Or simply something to enjoy when you want a little moment at the end of the day

It brings color and energy to the table without requiring anything complicated.

🍸 How to Make it

3 oz tequila
2 oz triple sec
2 oz lime juice
2 oz pomegratante juice or liqueur
dash of bitters
Ice
salt and lime wedge for rimming glasses

  1. Run a lime wedge around the rim of the glasses, then rim with salt.
  2. Fill a shaker with ice and add the tequila, triple sec, lime juice, pomegranate and a dash of bitters.
  3. Shake for 15 seconds, then strain into glasses.
  4. Garnish with lime wheels or pomegranate seeds.

❤️ The Health Benefits (Yes, Really)

While it’s still a cocktail, there are a few reasons to feel good about what’s in your glass.

Pomegranate juice is rich in antioxidants—particularly polyphenols—which help protect the body from oxidative stress and support heart health. It’s also a source of vitamin C and potassium.

Citrus (like lime juice) adds brightness while contributing additional vitamin C, supporting immune health and helping with nutrient absorption.

And when used thoughtfully, cocktails like this can be part of a balanced approach to entertaining—something to enjoy, not overthink.

🥂 The Takeaway

This is more than just a margarita. It’s a cocktail with depth, color, and just a hint of storytelling—exactly the kind of detail that makes entertaining feel a little more memorable.

Here’s to beautiful drinks, meaningful moments, and cocktails that come with a story to tell!

Cheers,
Colleen 🥂

🍠 A Breakfast That Feels Like a Treat: Sweet Potato Avocado Toast with Cheesy Eggs (GF)

Sweet Potato Avocado Toast with Cheesy Eggs

I remember the first time I tried a sweet potato.

I hated it.

Growing up in the Midwest, white potatoes were the norm—baked, mashed, fried, you name it. Sweet potatoes just didn’t feel like they belonged on the plate. Funny how things come full circle though, because now I absolutely love them… and I’m not nearly as excited about white potatoes anymore.

This breakfast is one of the reasons why.

Sweet Potato Avocado Toast with Cheesy Eggs is one of those meals that feels a little special but is incredibly simple to pull together—especially on busy work or school mornings.

Instead of bread, slices of roasted sweet potato become the base for creamy avocado and rich, cheesy eggs. It’s warm, satisfying, and full of flavor while still feeling light and nourishing.

And if you’re someone who needs breakfast to be quick (like most of us do), here’s the best part: you can prep the sweet potatoes ahead of time. Slice and cook them the night before or over the weekend, store them in the refrigerator, and simply reheat them in the morning. It turns a beautiful breakfast into something that takes just minutes to assemble.

Why This Breakfast Works

This dish hits that sweet spot between comforting and energizing. The sweet potatoes add a subtle natural sweetness and heartiness, the avocado brings creaminess and healthy fats, and the cheesy eggs make it feel indulgent enough to keep you satisfied for hours.

It’s also naturally gluten-free, which makes it a great option for anyone avoiding traditional toast.

The Health Benefits

Beyond tasting great, this breakfast is packed with nutrients that help start the day strong.

Sweet potatoes are rich in fiber and loaded with beta-carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A—important for immune health, vision, and skin health. They also provide vitamin C and potassium, supporting overall wellness.

Avocados are full of heart-healthy monounsaturated fats along with fiber, potassium, and folate. They help keep you feeling full longer while supporting healthy cholesterol levels.

Eggs add high-quality protein along with important nutrients like vitamin D, B vitamins, and choline, which supports brain health and metabolism.

Together, these ingredients create a breakfast that’s balanced, nourishing, and satisfying—without feeling heavy.

A Breakfast Worth Waking Up For

This is the kind of meal that proves healthy food doesn’t have to be complicated or boring. With a little advance prep and a handful of good ingredients, you can have a breakfast that feels comforting, energizing, and just a little bit special—even on a busy weekday morning.

Here’s to breakfasts that are quick, nourishing, and worth getting out of bed for.

Cheers,
Colleen 🥂

Sweet Potato Avocado Toast with Cheesy Eggs
Makes 2 servings

1 large sweet potato, cut into 1/4-inch thick slices
olive oil for spritzing
1 avocado
4 eggs
1 tablespoon water
salt and pepper
1/4 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
1 tablespoon chopped parsley

  1. Preheat an air fryer to 400˚F. Lightly spritz both sides of the sweet potato slices with olive oil and place in an air fryer. Air fry for 10 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, mash the avocado and set aside.
  3. Scramble the eggs with the water. Lightly spritz a nonstick skillet with oil and set over medium-low heat. Add the eggs and cook one minute. Add the cheese and continue to cook until the desired consistency. Salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Remove the sweet potato toasts from the air fryer to a serving plate. Top with the avocado and eggs, then sprinkle with parsley and serve.
