๐Ÿท When a Guest Has Had Too Much: What to Do

Letโ€™s talk about something that doesnโ€™t make it into the pretty dinner party photos.

Sometimesโ€ฆ a guest has too much to drink.

Look, it happens. And when youโ€™re the host and youโ€™re serving alcohol, you also carry responsibility. In many cases, you are legally liable if a guest leaves intoxicated and is involved in an accident.

Thatโ€™s not meant to scare you.
Itโ€™s meant to prepare you.

A good host plans for the fun parts of the evening โ€” and quietly thinks through the โ€œjust in caseโ€ moments too.

๐Ÿšจ First: Pay Attention Early

The best way to handle this situation is to prevent it from escalating.

A few easy guardrails:

  • Serve food consistently throughout the evening.
  • Keep water glasses filled.
  • Donโ€™t top off wine glasses automatically.
  • Offer coffee or dessert before another round.
  • Slow the pace if you notice someone drinking quickly.

Most situations can be gently redirected long before they become uncomfortable.

๐Ÿ›‘ If Someone Has Clearly Had Too Much

Stay calm. Stay kind. Stay firm.

You have options:

  • Offer your sofa bed or guest room.
  • Call a cab or Uber.
  • Have your partner (or you) drive them home.
  • If they live close, offer to walk them home.

But one rule is non-negotiable:

Never send them to their car.

Even if they insist.
Even if they say theyโ€™re โ€œfine.โ€
Even if it feels awkward.

Your responsibility as a host outweighs temporary discomfort.

๐Ÿ’ฌ What to Say

If you need language, keep it simple and matter-of-fact:

“I’m not comfortable with you driving tonight. Let’s figure out another plan.”

You donโ€™t need to lecture. You donโ€™t need to embarrass them. Just shift into solution mode.

Most guests will appreciate you the next morning โ€” even if they resist in the moment.

๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ The Bigger Picture

Hosting is about warmth, generosity, and connection.
Itโ€™s also about care.

Being prepared for this possibility doesnโ€™t make your dinner party less fun. It makes you a thoughtful, responsible host โ€” the kind people feel safe around.

And thatโ€™s the highest compliment there is.

Hereโ€™s to joyful gatherings, safe rides home, and hosting with both heart and wisdom.

Cheers,
Colleen ๐Ÿฅ‚

Your New Weeknight Hero: Tuscan Herb Chicken Rice Bowls (Big Flavor, Zero Chaos)

Thereโ€™s a very specific kind of recipe Iโ€™m always chasing: bold flavor, minimal effort, and zero sink full of dishes.

Enter: Tuscan Herb Chicken Rice Bowlsโ€”a cozy, colorful, one-pot meal thatโ€™s about to earn a permanent spot in my weeknight rotation.

This is the kind of dinner that feels thoughtful and elevatedโ€ฆ without requiring an hour of chopping or a second wind after work. If you love meals that work just as well for a Tuesday night as they do for casual entertaining, this oneโ€™s for you.

Why Youโ€™ll Want to Make This (Again and Again)

โœ”๏ธ One-pot magic (hello, fewer dishes)
โœ”๏ธ Big Tuscan flavor without measuring a dozen spices
โœ”๏ธ Customizable for rice lovers and cauliflower-rice fans
โœ”๏ธ Meal-prep friendly and reheats beautifully
โœ”๏ธ Impressive enough for guests, realistic enough for real life

Basically: itโ€™s doing the most while you do the least.

Pressure Cooker Magic: Dinner, Simplified

On busy nights, my Pampered Chef Deluxe Multi Cooker is my MVP. This recipe leans hard into what it does best: efficient, one-pot cooking that doesnโ€™t sacrifice flavor or texture.

One of my favorite tricks here is cooking the rice inside the pressure cooker using a separate pan on the trivet. Everything finishes together, the flavors stay clean, and nothing turns mushy. Smart cooking without overthinking it.

Prefer cauliflower rice? Same delicious chicken and veggiesโ€”just skip the rice step and microwave your cauliflower rice at the end. Done and done.

The Flavor Shortcut That Changes Everything

Letโ€™s talk about the real secret weapon: Pampered Chefโ€™s Tuscan-Style Herb Chicken Mix.

This single packet delivers layered, herby, Tuscan-inspired flavorโ€”no spice drawer excavation required. Itโ€™s the reason this dish tastes like you tried harder than you actually did. Bonus: the packet includes other recipe ideas, so itโ€™s not a one-and-done ingredient.

Shortcut cooking, but make it delicious.

โœ… Easy, Easier, Easiest Ways to Make It Happen

โœจ Easy: Use the Tuscan-Style Herb Chicken Mix instead of building your own seasoning blend. One packet = instant, layered flavor.

โœจ Easier: Grab pre-sliced bell peppers and diced onion from the produce section to skip chopping altogether.

โœจ Easiest: Use microwave-ready rice or cauliflower rice and focus solely on cooking the chicken and veggies in the pressure cooker.

Hereโ€™s to weeknight dinners that feel a little fancy without the stress!

๐Ÿช‘ Seating Chartโ€ฆ or Let It Happen Naturally?

When planning a dinner party, one question always comes up:

Do you assign seatsโ€ฆ or let guests choose?

Itโ€™s fun to look back at what older etiquette books suggest. Traditionally, the host and hostess sat at opposite ends of the table, and guests were seated alternating male and female (when possible). The thinking behind this? It encouraged conversation between people who may not know each other well and kept discussion lively and balanced.

Very strategic. Very proper. Very 1950s.

Well, hereโ€™s my modern take.

โœจ Why I Still Assign Seats

When we host, we always determine seating ahead of timeโ€”and yes, I use place cards.

Not because Iโ€™m trying to be formal.
Not because Iโ€™m trying to impress anyone.

But because it removes awkwardness.

It eliminates:

  • The โ€œWhere should I sit?โ€ shuffle
  • Couples automatically clustering together
  • The one empty seat no one wants to claim

Instead, it quietly creates flow, balance, and better conversation.

And honestly? Guests love knowing you put thought into where theyโ€™ll sit.

๐Ÿ’ก A Few Simple Tips

  • Use place cards (store-bought or handmade โ€” both are lovely).
  • If you have little ones, let them create the cards. Itโ€™s a perfect way to involve them.
  • If guests donโ€™t know each other well, write each name on both sides of the card. It makes it easy to glance down and remember a name without embarrassment.

Little details like this donโ€™t complicate the eveningโ€”they smooth it.

๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ The Bottom Line

You donโ€™t have to follow traditional etiquette. You donโ€™t have to alternate male/female. You donโ€™t even have to sit at the head of the table.

But being intentional about seating? Thatโ€™s one of those small touches that can quietly elevate the entire evening.

Hereโ€™s to thoughtful tables and conversations that flow effortlessly.

Cheers,
Colleen ๐Ÿฅ‚
