When planning a dinner party, one question always comes up:
Do you assign seats… or let guests choose?
It’s fun to look back at what older etiquette books suggest. Traditionally, the host and hostess sat at opposite ends of the table, and guests were seated alternating male and female (when possible). The thinking behind this? It encouraged conversation between people who may not know each other well and kept discussion lively and balanced.
Very strategic. Very proper. Very 1950s.
Well, here’s my modern take.
✨ Why I Still Assign Seats
When we host, we always determine seating ahead of time—and yes, I use place cards.
Not because I’m trying to be formal.
Not because I’m trying to impress anyone.
But because it removes awkwardness.
It eliminates:
- The “Where should I sit?” shuffle
- Couples automatically clustering together
- The one empty seat no one wants to claim
Instead, it quietly creates flow, balance, and better conversation.
And honestly? Guests love knowing you put thought into where they’ll sit.
💡 A Few Simple Tips
- Use place cards (store-bought or handmade — both are lovely).
- If you have little ones, let them create the cards. It’s a perfect way to involve them.
- If guests don’t know each other well, write each name on both sides of the card. It makes it easy to glance down and remember a name without embarrassment.
Little details like this don’t complicate the evening—they smooth it.
🕯️ The Bottom Line
You don’t have to follow traditional etiquette. You don’t have to alternate male/female. You don’t even have to sit at the head of the table.
But being intentional about seating? That’s one of those small touches that can quietly elevate the entire evening.
Here’s to thoughtful tables and conversations that flow effortlessly.
