Who knew something as simple as flowers could spark so much debate?
If you flip through older etiquette advice, youâll see strong opinions. Some say bringing flowers to a dinner party is a big no-no because the host shouldnât be scrambling to arrange them when she should be greeting guests.
I understand the logic.
But if someone arrives at my door with flowers?
I am absolutely over the moon.
Truly. Itâs such a thoughtful gesture.
And this is exactly where my 45-minute hard-stop rule comes into play. (Everything is done 45 minutes before guests arrive â kitchen cleaned, table set, candles ready â so Iâm free to actually welcome people when they walk in.)
Because when youâve planned well, flowers arenât stressful⌠theyâre joyful.
đ¸ If Youâre Bringing Flowers
Hereâs my suggestion:
Bring them already arranged in a vase.
That allows the host to:
- Place them right on the table
- Set them on the entry table
- Or tuck them wherever they fit best
No scrambling. No searching for scissors. No last-minute design decisions.
And one important detail â if you bring flowers in a vase, please let the host know if youâd like the vase back. (Ask me how I learned that oneâŚ)
đż If Youâre the Host and Theyâre Unarranged
If a guest shows up with loose stems, stay relaxed.
You have options:
- Quickly place them in water and arrange later.
- Or (my favorite solution) hand them an empty vase and say,
âWould you mind arranging these? Iâd love to use them tonight.â
Most guests are more than happy to help â and it turns the moment into something collaborative rather than stressful.
⨠The Bigger Picture
Dinner parties arenât about rigid etiquette rules.
Theyâre about hospitality.
If someone brings flowers, theyâre saying:
âIâm happy to be here.â
Receive that spirit warmly. That matters far more than whether the stems are trimmed perfectly.
Hereâs to gracious hosting, thoughtful guests, and flowers that make the evening even brighter
