🍽️ Build Your Dinner Party Toolkit: 7 Pieces Worth Owning

If you host a dinner party a few times a year, there are a handful of items that are absolutely worth owning.

These aren’t flashy purchases.
They’re not trendy.
They’re not “magazine shoot” items.

They’re the quiet workhorses that make hosting easier, smoother, and far less stressful.

And if you have the space to store them, you’ll use them for years.

Here are my seven worthy investments:

1️⃣ A Set of 8–12 Wine Glasses

Choose an all-purpose shape that works for red wine, white wine, sparkling, cocktails, or even soda.

Uniform glassware instantly makes your table feel cohesive — and you won’t be scrambling to mix mismatched glasses when guests arrive.

Keep it simple. One style. Done.

2️⃣ Cloth Napkins

Aim for 100% cotton if possible. They wash beautifully and feel substantial in hand.

Cloth napkins:

  • Elevate even the simplest meal
  • Reduce waste
  • And can be used over and over

Neutral colors are timeless. Seasonal colors are fun. You truly can’t go wrong.

3️⃣ A Tablecloth

Yes — go to a store and actually see it in person if you can. Feel the fabric. Check the weight. Look at the color in real lighting.

Pro tip:
Darker colors and prints are more forgiving when it comes to stains.

A tablecloth instantly signals, “This is intentional.”

4️⃣ Serving Spoons & Forks

You do not want to be digging through drawers five minutes before guests arrive.

Have a dedicated set that:

  • Looks attractive on the table
  • Is easy to grab
  • Lives in the same place every time

Small detail. Huge sanity saver.

5️⃣ A Serving Platter, Bowl & Salad Bowl

White is your friend here for platters and bowls and wooden for salad bowls.

Food pops against white.
It works with every season.
It never clashes.

You don’t need ten pieces — just a few versatile ones that can handle sides, salads, and mains.

Another choice – silver platters. You can find dozens of them at resale shops and tag sales. Or ask for a family piece. Someone will be so happy to pass one down.

6️⃣ A Reliable Food Thermometer

I never, ever, ever cook without one.

It removes guesswork.
It prevents overcooking.
It protects you from undercooking.

And it allows you to relax — which is the entire point.

7️⃣ Bonus: A Simple Coat Solution

This doesn’t get talked about enough.

If you host during colder months, a small garment rack or designated coat area keeps entryways from becoming chaotic. It’s a small investment that makes your home feel organized and welcoming.

✨ The Big Picture

Notice what’s missing from this list?

You don’t need:

  • Fancy china
  • A dozen serving sets
  • Matching everything

You need a few quality basics that support you.

Dinner parties aren’t about accumulation. They’re about preparation and connection.

Here’s to smart investments, stress-free hosting, and tables that feel effortless

Cheers,
Colleen 🥂

I’m the creator behind a growing collection of dinner party eCookbooks filled with approachable menus, easy recipes, and simple hosting ideas for real life. Whether you’re planning a casual get-together, a cozy seasonal dinner, or just looking for fresh recipe inspiration, my goal is to help you create meals that feel thoughtful, flavorful, and doable. I live in Wyomissing Hills, Pennsylvania with my husband, Bill—my biggest supporter and very willing taste tester. I’m also an Independent Consultant with Pampered Chef , a role I’ve loved for nearly 30 years because it allows me to help make cooking easier and more enjoyable with tools that truly work. When I’m not creating recipes or planning my next dinner party menu, you’ll usually find me watching hockey, mixing a great cocktail, or spending time with my poodle. Most of the recipes and entertaining ideas you’ll find here are designed to be simple, flavorful, and approachable—because I believe gathering people around the table should feel joyful, not overwhelming.
