🍷 Don’t Cry Over Spills

Spills are inevitable.

If you host long enough, something will tip, splash, or drip. It’s not a matter of if — it’s a matter of when.

And yes, the worst offender is usually red wine.

If you have brand-new carpet or a white (or nearly white) sofa and the thought of red wine makes your blood pressure rise, save yourself the stress and simply skip it. There are plenty of beautiful alternatives that won’t keep you on edge all evening.

But here’s the real truth:

There isn’t any foolproof way to prevent spills.
There is a way to be prepared — calmly.

🧽 Your Simple Spill Kit

You probably already have everything you need on hand:

  1. A roll of paper towels
  2. A dish towel or microfiber cloth for blotting
  3. A stain remover (Resolve, Oxy, etc.)
  4. Club soda
  5. Kitchen salt
  6. Graciousness

That last one is the most important.

🚨 If It Happens, Here’s What To Do

First: Stay relaxed.
Second: Move quickly — but don’t panic.

For red wine (or most food stains on clothing, napkins, tablecloths, or carpet):

  1. Blot — don’t rub. Remove as much liquid as possible.
  2. Generously pour kitchen salt over the stain.
  3. Lightly moisten the salt with club soda.
  4. Let it sit for a few minutes.
  5. Blot again and repeat if necessary.

The salt helps absorb the liquid, and the club soda helps lift the stain. Even if it doesn’t remove it completely in the moment, it will keep the stain from setting so you can deal with it properly the next day.

And the next day is when cleaning decisions should be made — not mid-party.

✨ The Most Important Rule

Handle the spill with grace.

The person who spilled will already feel awful. They’ll likely apologize repeatedly and replay it in their head all night.

Your response sets the tone.

A simple, calm:
“It’s okay — I’ve got it.”

…keeps the evening flowing and reassures everyone that this gathering is about connection, not perfection.

Dinner parties aren’t measured by spotless carpets. They’re measured by laughter, conversation, and how people felt in your home.

Here’s to gracious hosting, relaxed responses, and memories that matter more than messes

Cheers,
Colleen 🥂

I’m the creator behind a growing collection of dinner party eCookbooks filled with approachable menus, easy recipes, and simple hosting ideas for real life. Whether you’re planning a casual get-together, a cozy seasonal dinner, or just looking for fresh recipe inspiration, my goal is to help you create meals that feel thoughtful, flavorful, and doable. I live in Wyomissing Hills, Pennsylvania with my husband, Bill—my biggest supporter and very willing taste tester. I’m also an Independent Consultant with Pampered Chef , a role I’ve loved for nearly 30 years because it allows me to help make cooking easier and more enjoyable with tools that truly work. When I’m not creating recipes or planning my next dinner party menu, you’ll usually find me watching hockey, mixing a great cocktail, or spending time with my poodle. Most of the recipes and entertaining ideas you’ll find here are designed to be simple, flavorful, and approachable—because I believe gathering people around the table should feel joyful, not overwhelming.
